A Vast Natural Garden Filled with Alpine Plants
The garden covers approximately 100,000 square meters, an area roughly twice the size of Tokyo Dome. More than 500 species of alpine plants native to the Shiga Kogen area grow throughout the expansive grounds, creating a constantly changing display of mountain flowers and vegetation as the seasons progress.
Because the garden lies at an elevation of more than 2,000 meters, visitors can experience a landscape close to the natural tree line. The clear mountain air, open views, and diverse plant life create an atmosphere quite different from botanical gardens in urban areas.
A Spectacular Carpet of Yellow Daylilies
One of the garden’s most impressive sights is the vast colony of Nikkōkisuge daylilies, also known as Zen-teika, which bloom in early summer. Covering approximately 50,000 square meters, the flowers spread across the mountain slopes like a brilliant yellow carpet.
This spectacular floral landscape has become one of the signature sights of Shiga Kogen during its green season. When the yellow flowers contrast with the surrounding green mountains, the scenery offers a memorable experience for photographers, hikers, and nature lovers alike.
One of Japan’s Largest Alpine Botanical Gardens
Higashidateyama Alpine Botanical Garden is known as one of Japan’s largest gardens dedicated to alpine plants. Its greatest attraction is its location in a high mountain environment where plants can be observed in conditions close to their natural habitat.
Surrounded by the cool, clear air of the mountains and the rich ecosystems of Shiga Kogen, the garden provides an opportunity to appreciate the delicate beauty and diversity of alpine vegetation. It is a peaceful place where visitors can enjoy nature at its most pristine while looking out across the surrounding mountains.
Exploring Mt. Higashidate
A Mountain at the Heart of Shiga Kogen
Mt. Higashidate is one of the important mountains that make up the Shiga Kogen highlands. The mountain reaches an elevation of approximately 1,994 meters and is surrounded by forests, mountain trails, ski areas, hot springs, and accommodation facilities.
In winter, Mt. Higashidate forms part of the extensive Shiga Kogen ski area and attracts skiers and snowboarders. During the green season, however, the landscape takes on a completely different character as alpine flowers bloom across the mountain and visitors come to enjoy hiking and sightseeing.
Easy Access to the Mountain Summit
One of the major attractions of Higashidateyama Alpine Botanical Garden is that visitors do not need extensive mountaineering experience to reach this high-altitude environment. Gondolas and lifts provide convenient access to the upper mountain, making it possible for a wide range of visitors to enjoy the scenery and botanical garden.
The Higashidateyama Gondola Lift connects Hoppo Onsen with the summit of Mt. Higashidate, while the Takamagahara Line Lift provides access from Takamagahara toward the summit area. These lifts make it easy to combine a visit to the botanical garden with a leisurely mountain walk.
Mountain Views and Hiking
The area around Mt. Higashidate is surrounded by a number of scenic peaks, including Mt. Terakoya, Mt. Nishidate, and Mt. Shiga. The surrounding mountains provide opportunities for hiking and walking while offering a chance to experience the distinctive alpine scenery of Shiga Kogen.
