A Park Set Against the Northern Alps
Two Distinct Areas with Different Landscapes
The park is divided into two major areas, each taking advantage of the landscape around it. The Omachi-Matsukawa Area lies at an elevation of approximately 690 to 890 meters and is surrounded by rich forests. The Horiganekotaka Area lies at approximately 620 to 730 meters and features the open agricultural landscapes characteristic of southern Azumino.
Both areas make use of the gentle slopes of the region’s alluvial fan landscapes. Rivers, forests, grasslands, farmland, and mountain views create a varied environment where visitors can experience several aspects of the Japanese countryside in a single park.
Wildlife and Environmental Learning
The surrounding natural environment provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including Japanese macaques, Asiatic black bears, and Japanese serows. Numerous birds and plants can also be observed throughout the park.
The park has been developed with an emphasis on coexistence between people and nature. For this reason, it is not simply a place for recreation but also an important setting for environmental education and learning about local ecosystems.
Seven Themed Zones
National Alps Azumino Park is organized around seven themed zones, based on the concept of creating rich opportunities for people to enjoy their leisure time while surrounded by nature and culture. Each area offers different scenery and activities, allowing visitors to experience the character of Azumino in a variety of ways.

Azumino School and Exhibition Facilities
Azumino School is an interactive exhibition facility where visitors can discover the region’s nature, culture, and history through hands-on experiences. Exhibits and workshops encourage visitors to learn through multiple senses rather than simply viewing displays.
The facility is suitable for both adults and children, making it a useful destination for families who want to combine sightseeing with an educational experience.
Seasonal Flower Fields
One of the most photogenic features of the Horiganekotaka Area is its expansive flower fields, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Northern Alps. In spring, colorful tulips cover the fields, while summer brings brilliant sunflowers and autumn fills the landscape with cosmos flowers.
The flowers spread across gently terraced areas, creating striking seasonal scenes. With the mountains rising in the distance, the combination of colorful flowers and alpine scenery provides excellent opportunities for photography.
Playgrounds and Adventure Areas
Children can burn off energy at the park’s large playgrounds and athletic areas. The Marshmallow Dome, a large inflatable play structure, is especially popular with children.
Adventure playgrounds also allow visitors to climb, balance, run, and explore while surrounded by nature. These facilities make the park particularly appealing to families looking for an active day outdoors.
