Shirabiso Highland

A Mountain Paradise Overlooking the Southern Alps

Shirabiso Highland is a spectacular mountain plateau in Kamimura, Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, located at an elevation of approximately 1,918 meters. Its name comes from the shirabiso fir, an evergreen conifer belonging to the fir family that grows naturally in the high mountains.

Stretching across the mountains facing the majestic peaks of the Southern Alps, the highland is known as a mountain paradise where visitors can enjoy dramatic landscapes that change with the seasons. The combination of high elevation, clear air, expansive mountain views, and remarkably dark night skies makes it one of the most memorable places to experience the natural beauty of southern Nagano.

Location and Access to the Highland

Shirabiso Highland can be reached by following Kamimura Route 1 uphill from the eastern exit of Yahazu Tunnel. Nearby is Shirabiso Pass, which also serves as a trailhead for Mount Oku-Chausuyama, one of Japan’s 300 Famous Mountains.

From Shirabiso Pass, it takes approximately 10 minutes on foot heading south to reach Shirabiso Highland Amanogawa, the area’s central accommodation facility.

From the highland, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Southern Alps, including Mount Hijiri and Mount Arakawa. When weather conditions are favorable, the panorama extends even farther to the Northern Alps, Central Alps, Mount Ontake, and Mount Ena.

A “Paradise Above the Clouds”

At more than 1,900 meters above sea level, Shirabiso Highland truly feels like a “paradise above the clouds.” Looking out across the mountain ranges from this high vantage point can create the sensation of standing on an observation deck floating in the sky.

The snow-covered peaks of the Southern Alps dominate the view, while the Northern and Central Alps stretch into the distance. On clear days, the immense panorama offers a powerful reminder of the scale of the Japanese mountain landscape.

The highland is also popular as a sunset viewpoint. As the sun sets, the surrounding peaks turn golden before gradually fading into the darkness.

Once night falls, an entirely different landscape appears. Because artificial light is extremely limited, the highland offers exceptionally dark skies filled with stars. On clear nights, the Milky Way may be visible, creating the feeling of a natural planetarium. The area attracts astronomy enthusiasts from across Japan and is regarded as one of the notable stargazing locations in the central part of Honshu.

Seasonal Nature and Mountain Wildlife

Summer is an especially pleasant season at Shirabiso Highland. Cool mountain breezes sweep across the plateau, while delicate alpine plants bloom along the slopes.

Flowers such as Hakusan fuuro and Chinguruma add color to the highland scenery, creating landscapes that resemble natural paintings. With some luck, visitors may also encounter mountain wildlife such as the adorable stoat or the rock ptarmigan.

In autumn, the mountains are transformed by brilliant foliage. Red, orange, and golden leaves create striking contrasts with the evergreen forests and distant mountain peaks. The Southern Alps Echo Line is particularly attractive during this season, offering beautiful views from the road as it winds through the mountains.

Because of its high elevation, the road leading to the highland is closed during winter, generally from mid-November to mid-April. During the closure, snow covers the area and the highland becomes a remarkably quiet winter landscape. When the road reopens in spring, the return of greenery and alpine flowers marks the beginning of a new season.

Shirabiso Highland Amanogawa

Located at the heart of the highland, Shirabiso Highland Amanogawa is an accommodation facility situated at an elevation of around 1,900 meters. It serves as a base for hiking, trekking, mountain sightseeing, and stargazing.

Every guest room offers a mountain view, with sights of Southern Alps peaks such as Mount Hijiri, Mount Usagi, Mount Arakawa, and Mount Osawa. Staying here provides an immersive mountain experience, with the surrounding peaks seeming almost close enough to touch.

The facility includes a restaurant and a scenic bath. Meals make use of local mountain ingredients and flavors from Shinshu, allowing guests to enjoy regional cuisine while surrounded by the highland environment.

At night, the restaurant’s large windows provide views of the star-filled sky. On particularly clear evenings, the Milky Way can appear vividly overhead, creating an unforgettable scene. With its high elevation and spectacular surroundings, the accommodation offers a rare opportunity to spend the night close to the sky.

Trekking and Nearby Attractions

Several trekking and hiking routes can be found around Shirabiso Highland. One of the representative trails leads toward Mount Odakayama, which rises to 2,212 meters.

The round trip takes approximately three hours, making it a relatively accessible mountain hike. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with a broad panorama of the Southern Alps.

Another fascinating attraction is the Oikeyama Meteorite Crater, a geological site that provides an unusual opportunity to explore a landscape shaped by a meteorite impact.

The crater measures approximately 900 meters in diameter. Walking within the crater offers a rare chance to experience an unusual geological feature while surrounded by the mountain scenery of southern Nagano.

Shirabiso Highland Mountain Auto Campground

For travelers who want to spend more time immersed in nature, the Shirabiso Highland Mountain Auto Campground offers camping at an elevation of approximately 1,900 meters.

The campground enjoys an exceptional location with views toward the Northern, Central, and Southern Alps. Kitchen facilities and toilets are provided, allowing visitors to enjoy an outdoor stay with basic comforts.

After sunset, the experience becomes even more special. Sitting around a campfire beneath a sky filled with stars, surrounded by the silence of the mountains, offers a memorable connection with the natural environment.

For bathing facilities, campers can use Shirabiso Highland Amanogawa nearby.

A Place Where Nature and Mountain Life Meet

Shirabiso Highland is more than a scenic viewpoint. It is a place where visitors can step away from the noise of urban life and spend time surrounded by vast mountain landscapes, clear air, alpine vegetation, and an extraordinary night sky.

During the day, the Southern Alps provide a magnificent backdrop, while after dark the mountains give way to countless stars. The contrast between the expansive daytime panorama and the quiet beauty of the night makes the highland a destination with two very different faces.

Whether hiking toward a mountain summit, driving along the Southern Alps Echo Line, camping beneath the stars, relaxing at the mountain accommodation, or simply enjoying the view, Shirabiso Highland offers a memorable way to experience the high mountains of Shinshu.

For travelers exploring Iida and the remote mountain landscapes of southern Nagano, this highland is a remarkable destination where the scale of the Japanese Alps can be felt from an extraordinary elevation—truly a mountain paradise above the clouds.
