Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden

A Peaceful Forest Park in the Togakushi Highlands

Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden is a nature-rich botanical garden in the Togakushi area of Nagano City, located within Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park. Set at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters, the garden spreads across a cool highland landscape where visitors can observe the plants, birds, and wildlife characteristic of the Togakushi area.

With walking trails winding through forests, wetlands, and flower-filled areas, the garden offers a relaxing way to experience the natural beauty of Togakushi throughout the changing seasons.

A Vast Forest and Diverse Natural Habitats

The garden covers approximately 71.34 hectares and contains several distinct areas, including the Plant Observation Garden, Fir Tree Garden, and Mizubasho Garden. Well-maintained walking trails connect these areas, allowing visitors to explore the landscape at their own pace.

One of the most popular sights is the large colony of mizubasho, or Asian skunk cabbage, which blooms from early to mid-May. The delicate white flowers emerge among the wetlands and fresh greenery, creating one of the characteristic spring landscapes of Togakushi.

A Favorite Destination for Birdwatchers

Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden is also one of Japan’s notable destinations for birdwatching. Early in the morning, birdsong fills the forest, creating an atmosphere that feels almost like a natural concert hall.

More than 100 species of birds have been recorded in the garden. Among them are Japanese green woodpeckers, great spotted woodpeckers, blue-and-white flycatchers, and Japanese bush warblers. From spring through autumn, bird activity is especially lively, attracting birdwatchers and photographers from many places.
