A Long History Dating Back to the Nara Period
The history of Utsukushigahara Onsen is believed to stretch back to the early Nara period, more than 1,300 years ago. The Nihon Shoki, one of Japan’s oldest historical chronicles, records a planned visit by Emperor Tenmu to a hot spring known as Tsukama-no-Yu. This ancient hot spring is traditionally identified with the area of present-day Utsukushigahara Onsen.
From the Azuchi-Momoyama period through the Edo period, the hot springs were used as a place of relaxation by successive lords of the Matsumoto Domain. During the period when the Hotta family ruled the domain, a special bathing facility known as Yamabe Chaya was established as a private residence-style hot spring facility for the domain lord.
As more visitors began coming for therapeutic bathing, the number of inns and other accommodations gradually increased. During the Meiji period, the hot spring was renamed Yamabe Onsen, and the present name, Utsukushigahara Onsen, became established in the 1950s.
Local names such as Shiraito-no-Yu and Goten-no-Yu are also still associated with the area, preserving a sense of its long history.
A Peaceful Hot Spring Town with Traditional Character
Utsukushigahara Onsen has the welcoming atmosphere of a traditional Japanese hot spring town without the overwhelming bustle of a major resort. Historic buildings and traditional inns are scattered throughout the neighborhood, preserving the understated charm of an old-fashioned spa destination.
The communal bath known as Shiraito-no-Yu is popular with both local residents and visitors. It offers an easy way to experience the local hot spring culture while seeing how naturally tourism and everyday community life coexist in the town.
Hot Spring Water and Bathing Benefits
The water at Utsukushigahara Onsen is classified as a weakly alkaline simple hot spring. Its gentle texture is known for feeling soft and comfortable on the skin.
The water temperature is generally around 42–45°C, providing a comfortable bathing environment for those who want to relax in the hot spring. The springs also produce approximately 1,246 liters of water per minute, providing a plentiful and stable supply of hot spring water.
Traditionally, the springs have been used for therapeutic bathing and are associated with relief from conditions such as neuralgia and muscle pain, as well as recovery from fatigue. Because the water is relatively gentle, visitors can enjoy a relaxing bath while allowing both body and mind to unwind.
Recognized as a National Hot Spring Resort for Health and Recreation
Utsukushigahara Onsen was designated a National Hot Spring Resort for Health and Recreation in 1983 by Japan’s former Environment Agency, now the Ministry of the Environment.
This designation recognizes hot spring areas considered suitable for health promotion and recuperation based on factors including the quality of their waters and surrounding natural environment. It reflects the longstanding role of Utsukushigahara Onsen as a destination for rest and therapeutic bathing.
