A History Rooted in Freedom of Learning
The origins of Karuizawa Kogen Church date back to 1921. At that time, an event known as the Artistic Free Education Seminar was held in a lumber shed on the grounds of Hoshino Onsen.
The gathering attracted several prominent cultural figures of the period, including Kanzo Uchimura, a Christian thinker, poet Hakushu Kitahara, and novelist Shimazaki Toson.
The Spirit of Hoshino Yūgakudō
Kanzo Uchimura promoted the idea that play could also be a form of learning. He named the gathering place “Hoshino Yūgakudō,” a name that can be understood as a place for free and enjoyable learning.
The name is still displayed at the entrance of the church today, preserving the spirit of the original gathering and its emphasis on freedom, culture, and learning.
In 1941, the church took its present name, Karuizawa Kogen Church, and has continued to serve as a place where faith, culture, and community come together.
