Minamimaki Village (Nagano Prefecture)

A Highland Village Surrounded by Nature

Minamimaki Village is a beautiful mountain village in Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by mountains reaching around 2,000 meters in elevation. The village is broadly divided into two areas: the Uminokuchi area, which stretches along the Chikuma River, and the Nobeyama Highland area, which spreads across the foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains.

The difference in elevation between these two areas is approximately 300 meters, creating a remarkable variety of landscapes and natural environments within the village. National Route 141, the area’s main road, connects the two districts along a steep and winding section known as Ichiba-zaka, making the journey itself part of the mountain experience.

Minamimaki is also one of Japan’s well-known highland farming areas. Together with neighboring Kawakami Village, it is famous for producing highland vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage. During summer, the vast fields of Nobeyama Highland are filled with freshly harvested vegetables, creating one of the region’s most characteristic rural landscapes.

A Landscape Shaped by the Yatsugatake Mountains

The magnificent Yatsugatake Mountains rise to the west of Minamimaki, and their impressive peaks can be seen from much of the village. Clear mountain streams flow through the surrounding landscape, including the Chikuma River, Yukawa River, and Fujikawa River, providing water for both nature and agriculture.

The Beauty of Nobeyama Highland

The Nobeyama Highland around Nobeyama Station is one of the area’s most popular destinations for enjoying the outdoors. On clear days, the broad highland landscape opens out beneath the dramatic peaks of Yatsugatake.

Summer is especially pleasant, when cool mountain air provides a refreshing escape from the heat of the lowlands. The open fields, blue skies, and mountain scenery create a peaceful atmosphere that is ideal for walking, sightseeing, and simply enjoying the landscape.

A Village Known for Its Extreme Winter Cold

Minamimaki has a humid continental climate, classified as Dfb under the Köppen climate classification. Winters are particularly severe, and average daily temperatures can remain below freezing from December through March.

The village has recorded some remarkably low temperatures in recent years, including −26.0°C on February 3, 2012, −25.3°C on March 7, 2014, and −25.1°C on January 24, 2016. Its severe winter climate is one of the distinctive characteristics of this high-elevation region of Japan.
