A Family Park for All Generations
Toridaira Yamabiko Park was developed around the concept of a “Family Park,” designed so that people of all ages can enjoy the outdoors. The park is divided into five recreational zones: Nature, Observation, Play, Sports, and Culture.
This layout allows visitors to choose how they want to spend their time. Families can enjoy playgrounds and open lawns, sports enthusiasts can use the athletic facilities, photographers can seek out panoramic views, and nature lovers can explore the walking trails and seasonal flowers.
Central Plaza
At the heart of the park is the Central Plaza, where a monument commemorates the park’s selection as one of Japan’s 100 Best Urban Parks. A broad lawn provides plenty of space for events, recreation, and picnics.
On pleasant days, families can spread out a picnic blanket beneath the open sky and enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery. The spacious setting makes the plaza a natural gathering place within the park.
Observation Plaza
The Observation Plaza is one of the park’s highlights. Lake Suwa spreads out below, while clear weather can reveal the dramatic silhouettes of the Yatsugatake Mountains and the Southern Alps in the distance.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. Spring brings cherry blossoms and fresh greenery, summer covers the mountains in deep green, autumn paints the hills with colorful foliage, and winter creates a striking landscape of snow-covered mountains.
Sports and Outdoor Activities
The park has a wide variety of facilities for visitors who want to stay active. The multipurpose field can be used for ball games and other sports, while three tennis courts are popular with tennis players.
A 36-hole mallet golf course provides an activity suitable for a wide range of ages, from children to older adults. The park’s facilities make it possible to enjoy outdoor recreation while surrounded by highland scenery.
Summer Bobsleigh
One of the park’s most exciting attractions is the summer bobsleigh. Visitors ride a specially designed sled down a forest course measuring 659 meters in length, with a vertical drop of approximately 18 meters.
The combination of speed, fresh mountain air, and forest scenery makes the ride an enjoyable experience for families and anyone looking for a little adventure.
Health Forest
The Health Forest is an area designed to encourage visitors to exercise while enjoying the natural surroundings. A forest course includes a large slide, a Tarzan rope, and various outdoor fitness equipment.
Children can run and play among the trees, while adults can enjoy a leisurely walk through the forest. Seasonal wildflowers add another attraction to the walking routes.
Flowers and Seasonal Nature
Spring and early summer are particularly beautiful seasons at Toridaira Yamabiko Park. Skunk cabbage begins blooming around mid-April, followed by cherry blossoms in late April.
By late May, rhododendrons come into bloom, while fragrant lavender reaches its peak around mid-June. Because different flowers bloom at different times, each visit can offer a different view of the park’s landscape.
Culture and Relaxation
The park is also home to the PRINCE & SKYLINE MUSEUM, where visitors can explore the history of the Skyline, one of Japan’s best-known automobiles, along with historic and rare vehicles.
Other facilities include the Oasis Building, a center house with a restaurant, and a management building with a shop. These facilities make it easy to spend several hours in the park without having to leave the grounds.
Events and Outdoor Leisure
Various seasonal events are held at Toridaira Yamabiko Park. The event plaza includes an outdoor music theater, where local concerts, festivals, and other performances take place.
There is also a barbecue area, providing an opportunity for families and groups of friends to enjoy an outdoor meal surrounded by nature.
The park can be enjoyed throughout the year, although some facilities close during the winter season. On a clear day, the combination of blue sky, Lake Suwa, and distant mountains creates an impressive setting for a relaxing day outdoors.
A Highland Retreat Combining Nature, Recreation, and Culture
Toridaira Yamabiko Park brings together nature, panoramic scenery, sports, recreation, flowers, and local culture in one spacious highland setting. Its convenient location close to the center of Okaya makes it an easy addition to a sightseeing itinerary around Lake Suwa.
Families can enjoy the playgrounds and summer bobsleigh, active travelers can try sports and walking trails, and visitors seeking beautiful scenery can simply relax and admire the panorama from the observation areas.
Surrounded by the changing colors of the seasons and offering wide views across Lake Suwa and the mountains of central Japan, Toridaira Yamabiko Park is a refreshing place to experience the natural beauty of Okaya while enjoying a wide range of outdoor activities.
