Tateshina Amusement Aquarium

A Unique Aquarium High in the Tateshina Highlands

Tateshina Amusement Aquarium is located in the Tateshina Highlands of Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, at an elevation of approximately 1,750 meters. Known as the highest-altitude aquarium in Japan, it offers visitors a truly unusual experience: a world of water and freshwater life high in the mountains.

Opened in 1993, it is the only aquarium in Nagano Prefecture. Surrounded by the forests and highland scenery of Tateshina, the aquarium has become a distinctive sightseeing destination for visitors seeking something different from a conventional aquarium.

Discover Freshwater Fish from Around the World

Because Nagano is an inland prefecture with no coastline, the aquarium focuses primarily on freshwater fish from rivers and lakes around the world. Among its most impressive residents is the giant arapaima from the Amazon River basin, along with unusual species found in the rivers of Asia, Africa, and other regions.

The aquarium is home to approximately 200 species and 2,000 individual aquatic animals. Its collection offers visitors an opportunity to discover the remarkable diversity of life found in freshwater environments, from enormous fish to colorful tropical species.

The Giant Arapaima

One of the highlights is the arapaima, one of the world’s largest freshwater fish. Its enormous body and powerful movements make it an especially memorable sight.

During feeding shows and keeper presentations, visitors can watch the arapaima swallow its food with surprising force. The combination of the fish’s size and the dramatic feeding action makes these presentations particularly popular with visitors of all ages.

Exhibits Designed for Learning

Detailed information panels are provided throughout the aquarium, explaining the characteristics, habitats, and lifestyles of the fish on display. Visitors can therefore enjoy the exhibits while learning about the rivers, lakes, and aquatic environments in which these species live.

The displays are designed not simply to showcase unusual animals but also to encourage an understanding of freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity. The aquarium provides an accessible introduction to aquatic life for both children and adults.

Hands-On Experiences with Fish and Turtles

Visitors can also enjoy feeding experiences with koi and turtles. Two large ponds are available for feeding activities, which can be enjoyed by both children and adults throughout the year.

Being able to observe the animals up close and interact with them through feeding provides a memorable way to learn about living creatures and develop a greater appreciation for the relationship between people and nature.

A Pet-Friendly Aquarium

One of the distinctive features of Tateshina Amusement Aquarium is that pets are allowed inside the aquarium. Visitors can explore the exhibits together with their dogs, making it an unusual destination for travelers who do not want to leave their pets behind.

A covered dog run is also available outside the building for an additional fee. It is closed during winter but becomes popular with visitors traveling with pets from spring through autumn.

This pet-friendly approach, combined with its family-oriented exhibits and mountain setting, gives the aquarium a character quite different from many other aquatic attractions in Japan.

Seven Themed Zones: A Journey Through the World’s Rivers

The aquarium is organized into seven themed zones, each focusing on different types of freshwater environments and aquatic life. Visitors can encounter Amazonian fish, tropical fish, and unusual freshwater species with striking shapes and colors as they move through the exhibits.

Carefully designed lighting, water clarity, and habitat-inspired displays help bring the fish to life. Each zone offers a slightly different atmosphere, creating a sense of traveling through the freshwater environments of the world while remaining high in the mountains of Nagano.

A Building Inspired by the Parthenon

The architecture of Tateshina Amusement Aquarium is another attraction. The building was designed with the Parthenon of ancient Greece as its inspiration.

Its white columns and symmetrical form stand prominently among the forests of Tateshina, giving the building an almost temple-like appearance. The combination of classical architectural elements and the surrounding natural landscape creates an unusual and memorable setting.

The scenery around the building changes with the seasons, adding a different character in spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Panoramic Views from the Observation Terrace

After exploring the aquatic exhibits, visitors can head to the observation terrace on the roof. From here, sweeping views extend toward the mountains known collectively as the “Roof of Japan.”

Depending on weather conditions, visitors can see the Southern Alps, Central Alps, Mount Ontake, and Northern Alps. On clear days, the contrast between the distant mountain ranges and the exceptionally clear highland air creates a spectacular panorama.

The combination of an indoor aquarium and expansive mountain views is one of the most unusual aspects of the attraction. At Tateshina, the world beneath the water and the world beyond the windows come together in one experience.

The Aquarium’s History

From Opening to Renewal

Tateshina Amusement Aquarium opened in 1993. From the beginning, it attracted attention as Japan’s highest-altitude aquarium and became a new attraction in the Tateshina Highlands.

However, the aquarium temporarily closed in 2010 following the financial collapse of its operating company. Its story did not end there.

With strong support from the local community and visitors who wanted to see the aquarium return, Aquacia Tateshina Co., Ltd. took over its operation in 2012, allowing the aquarium to reopen.

In 2014, management was subsequently taken over by Tateshina Aquarium Co., Ltd., which continues to operate the facility. Its history reflects the strong connection between the attraction and the local community that supported its revival.

Connecting People with Freshwater Nature

Tateshina Amusement Aquarium serves not only as a tourist attraction but also as a place for learning about the importance of natural environments and biodiversity.

Through its freshwater fish exhibits, the aquarium introduces visitors to aquatic ecosystems from around the world and encourages them to think about the relationship between rivers, lakes, wildlife, and human society.

For children, the experience provides an enjoyable introduction to aquatic life. For adults, it offers an opportunity to discover species and ecosystems that may be unfamiliar even to those who have visited larger aquariums elsewhere.

Reaching the Aquarium

By Public Transportation

From JR Chino Station on the Chuo Main Line, take an Alpico Kotsu bus bound for the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway. The journey takes approximately 60 minutes.

The bus ride itself is part of the experience, as the route climbs through the Tateshina Highlands and offers views of the surrounding natural landscape along the way.

By Car

By car, take the Chuo Expressway and exit at the Suwa Interchange. Follow the Venus Line toward Tateshina, then turn right at Green Pole No. 94. The aquarium is approximately three minutes from the turn.

Parking is available, making the aquarium convenient for families and visitors traveling with pets.

Aquatic Life in the Mountains

Tateshina Amusement Aquarium is a rare destination where a global freshwater collection meets the highland environment of the Japanese Alps. At 1,750 meters above sea level, its setting is almost as remarkable as the creatures inside.

Visitors can encounter giant arapaima and colorful tropical fish, enjoy hands-on feeding experiences, explore seven themed zones, and then step outside to admire some of Japan’s most impressive mountain ranges from the observation terrace.

The aquarium’s combination of freshwater biodiversity, family-friendly experiences, pet-friendly facilities, distinctive architecture, and highland scenery makes it a memorable stop in the Tateshina area.

For travelers exploring the Tateshina Highlands, this unusual “aquarium in the sky” offers a chance to experience both the diversity of life beneath the water and the grandeur of the mountains above it.
