Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway

An Aerial Journey into the Mountains of Yatsugatake

The Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway is a popular mountain attraction in the Tateshina Highlands of Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. It offers an easy way to experience the spectacular natural scenery of the northern Yatsugatake Mountains without the need for a long mountain climb.

The ropeway connects the 1,771-meter-high mountain station with the summit station at an elevation of 2,237 meters, overcoming a vertical difference of approximately 466 meters. Large gondolas capable of carrying around 100 passengers take visitors on an approximately seven-minute journey through the sky.

A Spectacular Aerial View Through Every Season

As the gondola rises above the forest, a constantly changing mountain landscape unfolds below. In spring, fresh green leaves brighten the slopes. Summer brings deep green forests and alpine vegetation, while autumn transforms the mountainsides with brilliant golden foliage. In winter, the landscape becomes a vast world of pure white snow.

The summit station provides an impressive panoramic view toward the Southern Alps, Central Alps, and Northern Alps, Japan’s three great alpine ranges. On clear days, Mount Fuji can also be seen in the distance.

The combination of great altitude, crisp mountain air, and expansive views makes the seven-minute ride itself one of the highlights of a visit.

Enjoy the Mountains in Every Season

Spring to Autumn: Hiking and Highland Nature

The Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway operates throughout the year, providing access to the mountains in every season. From spring through autumn, visitors come for hiking, trekking, and nature observation.

Near the summit station lies the Tsuboniwa Nature Garden, a popular walking area where visitors can encounter the distinctive vegetation of the high mountains. Well-maintained paths make it possible to explore the landscape at a relaxed pace while experiencing the rugged beauty of the Yatsugatake Mountains up close.

Alpine plants bloom during the warmer months, adding seasonal color to the rocky mountain landscape. The contrast between the vegetation, open sky, and surrounding peaks makes the area especially attractive to photographers and nature lovers.

Winter: Snow, Skiing, and Snowshoeing

In winter, the ropeway becomes an important means of access for visitors enjoying skiing and snowboarding. The surrounding slopes are transformed into a beautiful snow-covered landscape, creating a memorable setting for winter sports.

Snowshoe trekking is another popular activity. Even visitors who are not experienced skiers can enjoy walking quietly through the snowy mountain environment. Surrounded by white forests and clear winter air, the experience can feel like stepping into a landscape painting.

Ropeway Specifications and Operation

The Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway has a total length of approximately 2,215 meters and a vertical difference of 466 meters. Under normal operating conditions, the gondolas travel at approximately 7 meters per second, and the one-way journey takes about seven minutes.

Services normally operate at approximately 20-minute intervals, although during busy periods the interval may be shortened to around 10 minutes.

A Three-Cable Ropeway System

The ropeway uses a three-cable operating system, consisting of two carrying cables and one haul cable. Two gondolas depart from the stations at the same time and pass each other near the middle of the route.

This arrangement provides a stable and efficient way to transport large numbers of visitors while allowing passengers to enjoy uninterrupted views of the mountain scenery during the ride.

Large Gondolas for a Comfortable Mountain Journey

In 1991, new large gondolas capable of carrying 101 passengers were introduced, and operations with the new cabins began the following year. Their increased capacity made it possible for more visitors to enjoy the aerial journey comfortably.

Today, the two gondolas are painted in distinctive colors: No. 1 is dark green and No. 2 is red. Their bright colors stand out beautifully against the sky, forests, and mountains as they travel between the two stations.

The History of the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway

From the Japan Pilatus Yokodake Ropeway

The history of the present-day Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway began in 1967, when its predecessor, the Japan Pilatus Yokodake Ropeway, opened.

The project was developed with joint investment from Nagano Prefecture and local interests and was considered an innovative mountain tourism development project for its time. The name “Pilatus” was inspired by Mount Pilatus in Switzerland, reflecting the impressive panoramic views of Japan’s three great alpine ranges from the area.

Changes and Modernization

In 1985, the operation was transferred to the private company Japan Pilatus Tourism Co., Ltd. The facility continued to be operated with the support of the local community.

New large gondolas were introduced in 1992. An accident occurred in October of that year, resulting in a temporary suspension of operations. Subsequent improvements to safety measures and equipment were carried out before service resumed.

In 2001, the facility was renamed the Pilatus Tateshina Ropeway. In 2012, it adopted its present name, the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway, beginning a new chapter in its history.

Today, the ropeway is operated by Kita-Yatsugatake Resort Co., Ltd., which also operates the Tateshina Kogen Museum of Art and Torajiro Yazaki Memorial Museum.

Explore the Tateshina Highlands Around the Ropeway

The area around the lower station offers a variety of attractions that can easily be combined with a ropeway visit. The Tsuboniwa Nature Garden is one of the highlights, while nearby cultural and family attractions include the Torajiro Yazaki Museum and the Tateshina Amusement Aquarium.

Travelers with more time can also explore nearby Lake Tateshina, Seikoji Temple, and the Tateshina Kogen Barakura English Garden. These attractions make the ropeway a useful centerpiece for a broader sightseeing itinerary around the Tateshina Highlands.

Access to the Ropeway

From JR Chino Station, take a bus on the Okutateshina Shibunoyu Line and get off at the Meiji Onsen Iriguchi stop. From there, continue on foot toward the ropeway’s mountain station area.

By car, a common route is to travel along National Route 299, known as the “Merchen Kaido,” and then continue via Prefectural Route 191 toward the Meiji Onsen entrance.

A Mountain Resort Where Nature and Tourism Meet

The area around the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway lies within a Special Zone of the Yatsugatake-Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park. Tourism facilities have been developed while the natural environment is protected, allowing visitors to experience the mountains without losing the character of the highland landscape.

Fresh greenery in spring, alpine flowers in summer, brilliant autumn foliage, and snow-covered scenery in winter give the Kita-Yatsugatake Mountains a different character throughout the year.

Visitors arrive for many different reasons, from hiking and photography to nature observation, skiing, snowboarding, and simply enjoying the mountain views. The ropeway makes it possible to reach an altitude of more than 2,000 meters in just a few minutes and experience a mountain environment that feels far removed from everyday life.

The Gateway to the High Mountains of Kita-Yatsugatake

The Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway is one of the most accessible ways to experience the spectacular highland scenery of Nagano. Its approximately 466-meter ascent offers a memorable aerial journey, while the summit opens onto sweeping views of the Southern, Central, and Northern Alps.

Beyond the impressive views, the ropeway provides access to hiking trails, the Tsuboniwa Nature Garden, winter sports, and the many attractions of the Tateshina Highlands.

For travelers looking for beautiful mountain scenery without committing to a demanding ascent, the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway offers an ideal introduction to the high-altitude world of northern Yatsugatake—a place where clear air, vast skies, and changing seasonal landscapes create a memorable experience in every season.
