A Collection of Waterfalls in a Deep Mountain Valley
Tadachi Falls is the collective name for a series of waterfalls scattered along the gorge of the Otakigawa River. Among them are Uruu Falls, Rasen Falls, Senshin Falls, Kirigataki Falls, Tenga Falls, Fudo Falls, Tsuruyoku Falls, Somen Falls and Hakobuchi.
The most famous is Tenga Falls, the principal waterfall of the area. Approximately 40 meters high, it plunges dramatically from a sheer granite cliff, creating an impressive spectacle of water and rock.
Tenga Falls has long been regarded as a sacred place. Local people are said to have traditionally avoided approaching the waterfall except during special rituals to pray for rain, reflecting the deep connection between the natural environment and local beliefs.
Hiking Through Forests and Waterfalls
The landscape around Tadachi Falls is especially beautiful during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn foliage. Clear streams, towering trees, moss-covered rocks and cascading waterfalls combine to create a dramatic mountain landscape that changes with the seasons.
Reaching Tenga Falls takes approximately one hour on foot along a mountain trail, making it a relatively accessible hiking destination for those accustomed to walking in the mountains. From Tenga Falls, it takes approximately another hour to reach the Fudo-iwa Observatory, where hikers can enjoy wider views of the surrounding mountain landscape.
The trails are maintained, but some sections can become slippery, particularly around wet rocks and streams. Visitors should therefore wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring appropriate trekking equipment.
A Mountain Landscape Shaped by Water
The waterfalls and rugged rock formations of Tadachi are the result of the interaction between flowing water and the mountain landscape over countless years. The clear waters of the Otakigawa River continue to carve their way through the granite gorge, creating a constantly changing landscape of pools, cascades and cliffs.
Walking through the forest while listening to the sound of rushing water offers a refreshing escape from everyday life. The deeper you enter the valley, the more strongly the surrounding forest and waterfalls create a sense of solitude and wilderness.
